I hope you all have heard about the website StumbleUpon. I find so many cool and interesting things that way. It’s super simple to use, all you do is let them know what you’re interested in and then start stumbling. With the simple click of a button you can discover a new artist, click again and you can learn how to make a delicious meal, click again and play silly internet games or learn about things you never knew existed. The only downside to SumbleUpon is the amount of time you can spend on it rather than working on an important paper for class (as I have been doing for the past 2 hours!), but I’m not complaining because I found my inspiration for today’s post:
At first when I watched this video I laughed at how silly this guy looks, but then I thought about how much time he spends coming up with these innovative ways to make music and entertain people on the streets. It truly is an art form when executed correctly.
During my travels I have seen some interesting street performers. While I was on a family vacation to the east coast we caught this guy, Jamey Turner, playing the glass harp in Alexandria, Virginia:
It was amazing to watch how he played with such ease. It must have taken tens of years of practice to accomplish this level of talent in such an uncommon way of making music. And what better way to share it with the world than to get out there on the streets and amaze people who were not expecting to see something like that take place.
And then there’s the street performers who just leave you perplexed. Why is this person out here making a fool of himself? Do they really think they have a special gift that must be shared with the world or are they just searching for ways to scrape up some cash? Well, on a recent trip to Europe we came across this guy in Rome:
It’s safe to say that his puppet shows were slightly amusing, but not worth the time spent watching or any monetary donations for his performance. All I got from this guy was a funny picture and a silly story; I guess he did leave an impression, although not a good one.
Street performing is an art that takes talent, creativity, and originality to be successful and recignized. Among the many unsuccessful acts you can find a few standout performers; although it does take a lot of courage to put yourself out there like that amongst strangers and I respect those that want to share their talents.
